Hot-dip galvanizing of metal structures: what it is, features, application

14.07.2025

Hot-dip galvanizing is a process in which metal surfaces are coated with a layer of zinc. To do this, zinc is melted and metal products are immersed in it. This is necessary to protect the metal from corrosion, increase its service life, and improve its appearance. The result is a strong and durable bond between the zinc and the metal. This makes the surface more resistant to aggressive environmental influences.

Features of hot-dip galvanizing of metal

New products are usually galvanized so that they do not yet show signs of corrosion. If corrosion has already appeared, the metal is first cleaned of rust and treated with special agents. The hot-dip galvanizing process is as follows:

  • Surface preparation. Metal parts are cleaned with chemicals to remove oils, traces of oxidation, and dust.
  • Immersion in molten zinc. The prepared parts are immersed in a special pool of molten zinc heated to a temperature of about 450°C. When the metal comes into contact with the hot liquid zinc, these materials bond firmly. The metal surface is completely covered with zinc.
  • Cooling. After being removed from the pool, the parts are cooled in the air or in special chambers. The fused joint hardens and a protective coating is formed.

Zinc-coated metal structures are ready for use and are protected against corrosion. The parts become stronger and can withstand heavier loads than non-galvanized metals. The surface has an attractive shine.

Application of hot-dip galvanizing of metals

Galvanizing of metals is used in various fields where products made of this material are used. It makes any metal structures stronger and mechanisms more durable.

Where hot-dip galvanizing of metals is used:

  • Construction. Galvanized metal structures are used for the construction of building frames, fences, roofing materials, posts, etc. Corrosion protection ensures the durability and stability of structures.
  • Transport and automotive industry. Galvanized parts are used in the manufacture of cars, railway cars, bridges, subways, and other vehicles and infrastructure due to their high degree of corrosion protection.
  • Electric power industry. Galvanized metal poles and structures are used for power transmission and power plant construction because they ensure durability in aggressive environments.
  • Agriculture. Galvanized metal products are used in the construction of agricultural buildings, fences, warehouses, and equipment. This provides better protection against moisture and fertilizers.
  • Industry and manufacturing. Galvanized metal parts are used in the manufacture of pipes, cables, pumps, containers, food processing equipment, and much more due to their corrosion resistance and strength.

Galvanizing metals saves time and money on repairs and replacement of damaged parts. It ensures safety and reliability in various industries. Thanks to galvanizing, metal structures become more durable and resistant to moisture, aggressive chemicals, and other adverse environmental conditions.
