Plastic and metal-plastic windows: what are they, what is the difference, which ones are better

Modern windows make homes warmer, quieter, and more comfortable, which is why they are often installed in houses and apartments. There are two types: plastic and metal-plastic windows. It seems that there is no difference between them, but this is not entirely true. Let's take a look at how they differ and which option is better for residential premises.

What are plastic windows?

PVC plastic windows are made of polyvinyl chloride, a strong and durable plastic. This is the basis of the frames. Inside the profile, there are chambers that provide heat and noise insulation. These windows come in different shapes and colors, and the glass units are selected depending on energy efficiency requirements.

Advantages of plastic windows:

• Good heat and noise insulation.
• Affordable price.
• No complicated maintenance required.
• Variety of designs and colors.

But there are also disadvantages. Over time, the plastic profile may deform slightly under the influence of temperature. In addition, such windows are less resistant to mechanical damage than metal-plastic ones.

What are metal-plastic windows?

Metal-plastic windows are very similar in appearance to plastic windows, but their profiles contain metal reinforcement. This makes the structure stronger and more durable. The frames do not deform and are resistant to wind loads or pressure from other building materials.

Advantages of metal-plastic windows:

• Reinforced rigidity and strength of the structure.
• Durability – they last longer than conventional plastic windows.
• They hold their shape better and do not deform significantly from frost or the heat of the summer sun.

But such windows also have disadvantages. Due to the metal reinforcement, they may retain heat slightly less well if additional thermal breaks are not used. Metal-plastic windows are also slightly more expensive than plastic ones.

Which windows to choose

The choice between plastic and metal-plastic windows depends on several factors. It is important to consider not only the cost, but also the characteristics of the windows, operating conditions, and heat and noise insulation requirements. The main criteria for choosing between plastic and metal-plastic windows are:

• Window size. For small windows of standard sizes, regular plastic windows are suitable. If you plan to install large windows, panoramic structures, or stained glass windows, it is better to choose metal-plastic windows. They are stronger and do not deform under their own weight.
• Climatic conditions. In regions with sharp temperature changes from -30 to +30 °C, metal-plastic windows will be more reliable, as they are more resistant to deformation. In a temperate climate, you can install regular plastic windows because there is less damage.
• Noise insulation. In noisy areas of the city or near roads, it is recommended to choose windows with enhanced noise insulation. In this regard, there is almost no difference between plastic and metal-plastic windows. Double or triple glazing is more important.
• Durability and strength. Metal-plastic windows will last longer because the metal reinforcement protects them from deformation. This is especially important for large structures and windows in areas with strong winds.

If economy is important and there are no special requirements for strength, it is better to choose conventional plastic windows. If the windows have to withstand high loads, be resistant to temperature changes, and last longer without deformation, then metal-plastic windows are a more reliable option.
