Closets: what they are, types, how to choose

20.11.2022

Large freestanding cabinets greatly clutter the interior, and at the same time there is not enough space in them. Want to store things in roomy furniture, which would not take up much space. A great option - a compartment cupboard (closet). It is located along the wall from top to bottom, and looks like part of it. Closets can be small in width, but have a lot of space inside due to the height. Closets are often made all the way to the ceiling. Thanks to this design, there is no cluttered space and there is a lot of space for storing things.

Kinds of closets

Closets on the design are of two kinds:

  • Built-in wardrobe-compartment - takes up space in the entire wall from floor to ceiling. It is roomy. Sashes are often made mirrored. Minus - if you are going to change the interior, it will be difficult to re-install the wardrobe-compartment to another wall.
  • Cabinet closet is a separate furniture with the bottom, top, sides, back wall and doors. It takes more material to make. Plus - a cabinet closet can be rearranged.

Cabinet closets can be angular - attached or in the form of a trapeze. They are suitable for hallways or a small room. Radius (rounded) wardrobes-compartments are made concave or convex.

A sliding door closet can divide a room into zones. It can be placed from floor to ceiling as a room divider. In this case, the back of the sliding door closet is decorated, or install a mirror on it.

Closets are often combined from a closet department and shelf. They can be supplemented with other compartments: drawers, a place to store an ironing board, etc.

Type of sliding system

Sliding system - the most expensive part of the wardrobe-compartment. Sliding systems differ in mechanism:

  • Roller - the load on the lower profile.
  • Hanging - the load on the upper profile, additional fixation on the bottom of the bracket-hook. It provides the correct path of movement of the sash.

Whatever the mechanism, it is better if the frame moves on a monorail. Then things and foreign objects don't get stuck in the mechanism grooves. The sash moves smoothly and easily. A closet with a monorail is more expensive.

On what material the profile is made of, depends on the strength and durability of the design. The most durable products are made of stainless steel. But they are also the most expensive. There are cheaper profiles: made of aluminum and plastic.

How to choose

What to consider when choosing a closet model:

  • If the ceilings are high, it may be more practical to make a combination of a closet compartment and a mezzanine. On top will be shelves for long-term storage of things that are rarely used. At the bottom will be a closet.
  • Interior lighting makes it easier to find things on the shelves. If there is a need to install LEDs, electrical wiring is provided at the stage of installation of the closet.
  • It is desirable that the closet was made of material safe for health. MDF boards are made from natural sawdust and resin. They do not emit any harmful substances. Particleboard can contain toxic components. If particleboard is used, the surface must be well insulated with decorative film and other coatings.
  • The quality of hardware handles and fasteners must be high. Otherwise they will have to be replaced often.

Before buying, check the smoothness of the movement of the sashes, how firmly the parts are connected, there are no chips. It is worth paying attention to what the smell inside the wardrobe-compartment. There may be a slight smell of wood, glue and varnish, which will get rid of over time. If the smell is pungent, then perhaps the composition of the materials contains chemicals that may be harmful to health. You can ask the store manager for information about the furniture manufacturer and look for reviews on the Internet about a particular model.
