Twine (rope): what it is, types, uses

14.03.2023

Twine - a rope for all occasions. It is used in agriculture, for tying and packaging of goods in production, for transportation and even used as a decorative element. Twine made of natural materials tied gift wrapping. Ropes come in different compositions of fibers and type of thread.

Twine types

Twine differs by the type of material from which it is made:

  • Textile twine consists of twisted strips of paper, yarn or cotton threads. Such rope is used for packaging goods.
  • Polypropylene twine consists of polypropylene threads. The feature of this material is that it can withstand low temperatures down to -50. The disadvantage of polypropylene is that it deteriorates from exposure to ultraviolet light, it becomes brittle, burns out. However, developers are trying to solve this problem, and the material is becoming more resistant to the sun.
  • Capron twine is made of a synthetic material that can withstand heavy loads. It is used for tying loads, in engineering, fishing and in the home.
  • Jute twine is a disposable product. Jute fiber is similar in properties to linen material. Its color varies from light golden to rich brown. The peculiarity of jute twine is that it is not electrified, it withstands friction, knots are durable.
  • Linen and hemp twine is made of natural vegetable fibers.
  • Polished linen twine is made from polished linen fibers. The material is resistant to prolonged tension, so it is suitable for packaging goods.

Twine differs by the type of weaving. It can be made of one twisted thread, several twisted threads or several not twisted threads. Twine made of several fibers is more durable.

Twine Applications

Synthetic twine is used in agriculture. It binds bales of hay, straw, green grass. The material firmly fixes the compressed plants, does not untie and its tension does not weaken. Thanks to it the hay straw retains its shape.

Twine made of polypropylene or kapron delimit the beds in the garden, tie up plants in the open ground or in greenhouses. This material does not deteriorate due to moisture and withstands loads. Polypropylene twine is stretched instead of clothesline. It is resistant to various adverse effects: temperature changes, humidity. The thread is tear-resistant.

The food industry mostly uses cotton twine. It consists of environmentally friendly fibers and does not break under the influence of low or high temperatures. However, cotton thread deteriorates from prolonged exposure to moisture. The material is soft, easy to use, it is easy to knit strong knots.

Twine has a decorative application. From natural types of threads create a variety of handmade products. Twine is used as a decorative element in panels, wicker things, collages. It is used to knit mats, baskets and bags.
