Wall grooving machine: what it is, how to choose and use it
- 23.11.2022
Wall grooves - these are grooves that are made in the walls for electrical wiring, pipes and other communications. They should be obtained with even edges, the right size, the same depth over the entire length. Manually achieve this is difficult, so it is better to use a special tool - a machine for cutting wall grooves.
What is a machine for cutting wall grooves
A wall grooving machine is a machine that simultaneously cuts two parallel grooves in a wall or other surface. Material remains between them, but it is easy to remove. The cut edges are straight. The wall grooving machine works on concrete, brick, stone or drywall.
The wall grooving machine is constructed with two diamond discs arranged in parallel. Their depth of penetration into the wall is adjustable. Roller guides and parallel side stops make the cut clear. The discs are partially covered from above by a shroud that insulates your hands from the cutting system. It also keeps out dust and crumbs that are generated while cutting material.
Types of wall grooving machines
Wall grooving machines differ in several ways. This affects which model is suitable for which tasks and amount of work. The first factor is what size grooves are needed. The deeper it is, the more powerful the machine should be, and the bigger the diamond blades should be. In terms of power, machines for cutting wall grooves come in three varieties:
- Lightweight or household. Weight up to 3 kg, power - 1.1-1.8 kW. For narrow, shallow wall grooves for electrical wiring or Internet cables.
- Medium or semi-professional. Weight 3 to 8 kg, power 2 to 2.2 kW. Suitable not only for wiring, but also for wall gutters for plumbing and heating pipes.
- Heavy or professional. Weight from 8 to 14 kg, power from 2.4 kW. Such a machine makes wide wall grooves for bulk sewer pipes.
Types of construction:
- Two-disc - makes two grooves.
- Single-disc - one groove is obtained.
- Straight - the discs are placed at right angles to the work surface.
- Angular - the angle of the discs is adjustable. These machines for cutting wall grooves are used when grooves need to be made in the corner.
Wall grooving machines differ in the type of power supply. Stationary models are plugged in and are more powerful.
Cordless wall grooving machines are pre-charged. Although they are less powerful, they have the advantage of mobility. They can run for up to 40 minutes, which is often enough time to get the job done.
How to choose a machine for cutting wall grooves
When buying pay attention to the following parameters:
- The ratio of power to the size of the discs. The factory product has the optimal size discs. For light models, the discs are 125 mm, for heavy - 250 mm. It is not worth installing a disc, the size of which, exceeds the size specified in the instructions.
- Number of revolutions per minute. Smaller machines are more productive, because the disc rotates faster. In heavy machines for cutting wall grooves, the spindle rotates more slowly.
- Groove depth. On average, this is adjustable from 1 mm to 3 cm. In medium models - from 5 mm to 5-6 cm, in heavy models - up to 8.5 cm.
- The kerf width is set only in two-disc machines. It is adjustable. In small models, the optimal limit for cable laying is 5-20 mm, in large models - up to 40 cm under the pipes.
- There are machines that cut from yourself, to yourself or in both directions. It is safer to move the machine to cut wall grooves from yourself.
- If the body material is plastic, it must be shockproof, with ventilation slots. It is convenient when the handles have rubber pads. Gearbox and protective cover made of aluminum do not allow the machine to overheat.
