Sateen: what is this fabric, features, application
- 09.09.2023
Satin is a fabric made of cotton threads. The material is dense, durable and wear-resistant. The surface of the fabric has a slight shine due to special processing and twisting of threads. From sateen sew bed sets, curtains, women's and men's clothing and other things.
Features of satin
The technology of weaving sateen uses a dense thread as a base, and twisted thin thread to form the front side. As a result, the front surface has a smooth texture, while the underside is rough and dense. The luster of the material is affected by how tightly the thread is twisted.
The strength of satin is increased by applying alkalis and then acids. This procedure is called mercerization. It increases the value of the material. Such exposure also fixes the dye in the fibers of the threads. Therefore, satin does not shed. During the mercerization process, the threads swell. Their lint is clumped together or removed completely. The thread is smoothed and becomes shiny.
Cheap types of sateen do not undergo mercerization. They are processed by hot stamping. The front side of the material is pressed and therefore becomes smooth. However, after about 10 washings, the fibers fluff up, the material loses its smoothness and luster.
Types of sateen by density per 1 square centimeter:
- Standard sateen consists of threads in an amount from 85 to 130. From it, bed linens are sewn. If the fabric is treated with mercerization, there are no lint on it, it is homogeneous. Embossed fabric is more rough.
- In printed sateen from 85 to 170 threads. Patterns on the fabric form multicolored threads directly in the fabric. This material is used to sew bed linens.
- Satin, decorated with the use of another technology of pattern printing has a density of up to 170 threads. The peculiarity is that the pattern is applied to the surface of the fabric. Thanks to this it is possible to select the pattern for products of different sizes.
- Satin jacquard has a density of 170 to 220 threads. The cloth is obtained identical on both sides. The pattern is formed in the process of manufacturing the material. The pattern with a glow is obtained located slightly below the matte surface of the background.
- Mako Satin is considered the densest fabric with a thread count of more than 220 threads. The peculiarity of this material is that the threads are used as thin as possible. Thanks to this, the fabric is very strong, but delicate and light.
Application of sateen
Satin is widely used for sewing bed linen, because it is very strong and wear-resistant. The fabric withstands up to 250 washings, and then the glossy luster is lost. However, the material still remains durable. Satin is weakly wrinkled, the folds are easily smoothed. This material is also used for draperies, curtains, tablecloths.
From sateen sew such clothes:
- Evening and wedding dresses.
- Colored and solid-colored women's shirts, blouses tops.
- Men's shirts.
- Pajamas, bathrobes, clothing for the home.
Light and gentle sateen is used for making clothes for small children. The material is hypoallergenic, does not cause irritation. The fabric acquires the temperature of the body, so in a dress made of satin in the summer is not hot. In winter, this material is not cold.
