Washbasin faucet: types and features, how to choose

27.12.2022

Washbasin faucets are made of different shapes and designs, so that you can choose the right one for a large or small washbasin. Also take into account the need for functionality, the shape of the mixer spout and location. Let's take a look at the main types of faucets and some tips for choosing.

What kind of faucets there are

The type of design of faucets:

  • Two-valve faucet. One valve regulates the flow of hot water, the other valve turns on and off the flow of cold water. Ceramic faucet deteriorates from impurities in hard water, so it is recommended to install a filter in the water supply.
  • Single-lever faucet. The water flow is controlled by a joystick. It is easy and fast to change the temperature and flow strength. If the ball valve has a stiff stroke, it can be uncomfortable to operate it. There is a ceramic cartridge inside the joystick, which can be damaged by grains of sand, so it is advisable to install a filter.
  • Touch Faucet. Water is supplied automatically when an infrared sensor reacts to a hand brought near. The pressure level and temperature are set on the display. To operate the mixer it is necessary to connect an electric line or to change the batteries at regular intervals. It is also not convenient to draw water through the sensor faucet, because you have to keep your hand under the faucet all the time to activate the flow.
  • A faucet with a thermostat. They have one lever that sets the temperature and another that regulates the water flow. The thermostat controls the temperature of the flow, automatically balancing the amount of cold and warm water, the force of the head. These faucets are the most comfortable in use - you do not need to turn the valves or adjust the right angle of the joystick every time to get the water to the right temperature.

The place of installation of the faucet:

  • On the sink bowl - the most common way to install the faucet.
  • On the countertop - the mixer spout hangs over the sink. While stylish, it's less practical. Water from wet hands gets on the countertop surface when you turn off the valves or the foot.
  • On the wall above the sink - this location of the faucet saves space, looks original. The disadvantage - complicated installation. If repairs are required, you will have to remove the decorative tile, under which the communications are hidden.

How to choose a faucet

First of all, decide on the type of faucet: lever, joystick design or sensor control. Decide whether it will be installed on the sink bowl, on the countertop or on the wall. They also pay attention to the design of the valve or lever, its shape, and whether the valves are easy to turn or whether the joystick moves easily.

The material significantly affects the appearance of the faucet and its working life:

  • Brass - an alloy of copper and zinc, the most durable.
  • Stainless steel - strong material, does not corrode.
  • Silumin - an alloy of aluminum and silicon. The material is not strong, the glossy surface of the metal quickly loses its appeal.
  • Ceramics - looks rich, but is a very fragile material.
  • ABS-polymers - bright colors and unusual shapes add originality to the design, but it is a short-lived material.

The form of the spout depends on the convenience of using the faucet. It can be short, straight or high and arched, stationary or movable. Which shape is better depends on the size of the sink and whether it will be necessary to draw water into voluminous containers. If you want to wash under the flow of water, then the spout of the faucet should be high enough. The spout can also be flexible, which is important if you want to turn it or tilt it to the desired side.
