Welded galvanized mesh: what it is, types, application
- 27.02.2025
In order for concrete slabs and structures to be strong, they are made with the use of a metal base. Often it is welded mesh. It is also used for other tasks. Let's consider what this material is, its types and application.
What is welded mesh
Welded mesh is a kind of rolled metal. It is made by welding the wire, located perpendicularly. Mesh cells are obtained in the correct shape in the form of a square or rectangle. The diameter of the wire varies. Welded mesh can be made of thin bars or heavy reinforcement. Depending on the thickness of the wire, it is produced in rolls or in sheets.
How strong the welded mesh will be depends on the diameter of the bars and the mesh size. The thicker the wire, the stronger the base will be. The smaller the mesh size, the stronger the welded mesh.
Advantages of welded mesh:
- Galvanized product does not rust and is protected from dampness, chemicals.
- Welded mesh retains its structure.
- Long service life.
- Welded mesh looks neat.
Types of welded mesh
The simplest and cheapest welded mesh without protective coating. It is used if it will be hidden. For example, when pouring the floor. Galvanized mesh is protected from corrosion and looks attractive. It is used in the construction of fences, partitions.
It matters at what stage the welded mesh is galvanized. If the surface of the wire is first covered with a protective layer, and then welded, the zinc melts and burns out in the joints. Over time, corrosion will form in these areas. Therefore, in order for the coating to be reliable, first the wire is welded into a mesh, and then galvanized. The technology of manufacturing can be clarified from the seller or manufacturer of this material.
Types of galvanizing:
- Galvanic galvanizing of welded mesh is performed by an electrochemical method. The thickness of the protective layer is small, not more than 20 microns.
- Hot-dip galvanizing is a complex process, which manages to apply a layer of 60 microns. The welded mesh is immersed in molten zinc. Thanks to this, the product receives a high level of protection against rust, it does not deteriorate from atmospheric effects. This coating protects against mechanical damage.
Welded mesh is covered with polymer material. Thanks to this, it looks aesthetically pleasing and lasts longer, does not deteriorate from chemical attack. Therefore, welded mesh is used to make partitions in warehouses and various enterprises. Welded meshes are also made of stainless steel. They are more expensive than other types of similar products.
How galvanized welded mesh is used
Welded mesh is laid when creating the foundation of buildings. It is used to reinforce various structures: walls, floors and brickwork. Welded mesh strengthens the road surface. It also serves as a framework for greenhouses, enclosures, animal cages and is used in the construction of fences.
