What hoisting slings are: Types and features
- 18.03.2023
Hoisting slings are used for moving and loading goods and bulky loads. They are needed in various areas of construction, agriculture and forestry, industry, cargo ports. Let's look at the features of the main types of slings that are used most often.
Textile slings
Fabric slings consist of tapes that secure delicate cargo. They can be looped or circular. Textile slings are differentiated by color, which indicates the width of the straps:
- purple ones are 5 cm;
- the green ones are 6 cm;
- yellow - 9 cm;
- gray - 12 cm;
- red - 15 cm;
- brown, 18 centimeters; blue, 24 centimeters;
- Blue: 24 centimeters;
- orange - 30 cm.
The wider the strap, the longer the loop and the higher the lifting capacity. Green slings can lift 2,000 kg, orange slings have a maximum weight of 10,000 kg.
Advantages of textile slings:
- compact, they do not take up much space when folded
- low weight;
- the textile slings are shock-absorbent, so that shocks and impacts are minimized when the load is moved
- flexibility, which is useful in securing loads.
The disadvantages of textile slings include the fact that the straps can rub against sharp corners and edges of cargo. To avoid this, special pads are used. Also, fabric slings are not recommended for use at temperatures around +100 degrees, so they do not ignite.
Round Lifting Sling is a closed ring with a polyester backing inside and a seamless, durable nylon or polyester fabric covering on the outside. Round Lifting Sling are the most flexible, soft and flexible with high strength. They are easy to get under the load and secure in a variety of ways.
Chain Slings
Chain slings are branches made of chain links with hooks on the ends for securing the load. The material of chain slings is a high-strength alloy metal.
Advantages of chain slings:
- high strength and durability;
- chain slings can withstand a temperature of +500 degrees;
- it is possible to replace a worn element if necessary.
The disadvantages are the heavy weight of the slings and their high cost. Also chain slings can damage delicate cargo.
Steel slings
Steel is a strong metal that does not rust. Slings are steel ropes with loops on the ends for securing loads. The maximum weight they can lift depends on the diameter of the metal ropes.
Advantages of steel slings:
- ease of production reduces their cost;
- the ropes are flexible, so it is convenient to work with them;
- durability and high load capacity;
- the rope wears gradually over time, the metal fibers separate, which is easy to see, and time to repair or replace the sling.
The peculiarity of steel wire rope slings is that the ends of the loops are fixed manually or by machine pressing with metal sleeves. If, after the load is lowered, it is necessary to pull the removed slings out from under it, it is better to use slings where the loops are fixed to the rope by hand. For slings that are fixed with equipment, the metal sleeve will wear out quickly in this application.
Each type of sling comes with one, two, three or four strands. Their number depends on the size of the load and the convenience of fixation. The branches of the slings are fixed to the common attachment and can be easily removed if necessary.
