What should be a modern TV for the home: types, characteristics, functionality

29.12.2022

Whether it will be comfortable to watch TV depends primarily on picture reproduction technology, resolution, response time and sound quality. Let's take a closer look at these and other characteristics of a quality modern TV.

How the image is transmitted to the screen

Plasma monitors are no longer used by very few people. The most popular image transmission technologies are as follows:

  • LED - LED crystal panels. The image is bright, transmitted by backlighting matrix LEDs. These TVs are thin and lightweight, they hang on the wall. The drawback is that colors are bright and saturated only if the viewer is right in front of the screen. When you look from the side the image dims and glares.
  • OLEDs are organic LED panels that are thinner than LEDs. They have a wide viewing angle, rich colors, high contrast. They are often installed on TVs with a large diagonal, they cost more than their predecessors.
  • QLED - panels which work by illuminating a layer of quantum dots - tiny nanocrystals. The quality is similar to that of OLED displays, sometimes even better. This technology is used by Samsung.

Quality of image detail

Resolution affects how detailed the image on the screen will be. This figure is measured in pixels as a ratio of area. Ultra HD4K with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels gives the sharpest image available. There are 8K, but they are few and expensive. The downside is that the pictures and videos displayed must be of the same resolution. If it's lower, the monitor doesn't enhance it, it transmits the video as is. On many services, 4K quality is only available with a paid subscription.

How moving objects are displayed

Response time is the speed at which liquid crystals move from horizontal to vertical position. It should not exceed 8 milliseconds, otherwise the dynamic image will be blurred. The lower the response time, the clearer and more natural moving objects will be displayed.

What is the quality of sound

Thin TVs can not please the same sound quality as the speaker system only because there is no space for it in their compact body. However, today's TVs have high quality sound thanks to new technologies. For connoisseurs of sound with the effect of presence there are a little more oversized model of TV with a built-in subwoofer, stereo speakers with Dolby Digital and capacity from 20 watts.

Additional features of modern TVs

It will be more pleasant to watch TV with these parameters:

  • HDR support. Extended dynamic range (HDR) gives a realistic picture with depth and volume, brightness and clarity.
  • The viewing angle should be at least 170 degrees.
  • Screen diagonal. A large TV with a 50-inch diagonal looks cool. But for the viewers, it may not be comfortable if you watch it at close range. Large screen is suitable for spacious rooms and the distance from the viewers is more than 3 meters. If the distance from the TV to the sofa is 2.5 m, fit a diagonal of 37-40 inches.
  • Functionality. The Smart TV option allows you to access the Internet via your TV and use a browser and social networks.
  • Interfaces. Necessary ports for connecting external devices - USB for flash drives, cameras, smart phones, HDMI for laptops and gaming consoles.

Curved screens look original, giving the effect of greater immersion in the image. However, this perception occurs only if you sit directly in front of the TV.
