Laminated interior doors: what they are, types and features

13.01.2023

Laminated interior doors are made on the basis of a composite material. It is a multilayer fabric. The basis of such doors in most cases is a structure made of wood. To fill the voids, polyurethane foam or corrugated cardboard is used. This approach improves the strength and soundproofing properties. After that, thin MDF boards are glued to the outer surface by hot pressing. They provide for a decorative film that performs a protective function.

The upper laminated layer in appearance resembles a veneer, but in fact the difference is clearly visible. Such doors are considered an inexpensive analogue of wooden products.

Main varieties of laminated interior doors

Types of top coating of laminated doors:

  • paper laminate film;
  • melamine material;
  • fiberglass film;
  • polyvinylchloride film;
  • CPL-plastic.

The listed materials differ in the degree of wear resistance. The cheapest option is a paper laminated membrane. The minus of the coating is that it is not too durable. Such a film is often used to clad temporary partitions in buildings that are heated.

Melamine coating is obtained at the expense of a dense, multilayer paper. It is impregnated with artificial resins. Such doors are quite resistant to mechanical and chemical effects, so they last long enough.

Fiberglass membranes are a combination of thin glass and melamine threads. Doors from this line have a long service life and look aesthetically pleasing. Their price is comparable to the price of veneered models and those made of solid wood. Such finishes are not often used.

The composition of polyvinyl chloride membranes includes polymer resins. They are not harmed by contact with moisture, temperature fluctuations. Affordable cost and a wide range of colors have made doors coated with PVC membranes extremely popular.

Door leafs coated with CPL plastic are protected against moisture. The advantages of such doors lie in their increased resistance to wear and tear. They are often installed in public buildings - banks, offices. Laminated interior doors combine a solid appearance and relatively low cost.

Advantages and disadvantages of laminated door panels

The main advantages of laminated door panels are associated with such criteria:

  • democratic cost;
  • presentable appearance;
  • Resistance to the action of moisture and temperature fluctuations;
  • lightness of the door leaf;
  • easy care.

High-quality laminated film does not change its shape under the influence of moisture, it is not harmed by sharp temperature fluctuations. Low weight of such designs allows their installation even in drywall partitions.

Smooth laminated surfaces are endowed with dust-repellent properties, they are easy to clean from dirt with non-abrasive means with a mild action. They are available in a variety of designs, so you can integrate them seamlessly into any interior.

The disadvantages of laminated fabrics are that cheap films can burn out under the influence of the sun. Products of this type are poorly resistant to mechanical impacts. But the pluses of laminated doors still outnumber the minuses.
