Padlock: types and features, how to choose
- 18.08.2023
Padlocks are associated with ancient barns, gates and houses. However, they are often used to this day. Why? Padlocks are equipped with reliable mechanisms similar to those in door locks. You don't need a lot of preparation to install them. The design is easy to use.
Types of padlocks
Padlocking mechanisms of the padlock type differ in size:
- Small padlocks are used to lock boxes, cabinet doors, suitcases, mailboxes, etc.
- Medium padlocks are the most common in use. They are hung on doors.
- Large padlocks are used to close storage rooms, barns and other household structures.
Padlocks are made of several types of metal. Aluminum structures are lightweight, do not rust. However, due to the softness of the metal, they have low reliability. Steel padlocks are durable and resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations. However, they are expensive. Cast iron padlocks are durable, however, the material becomes brittle during temperature fluctuations. Latticed locks are attractive and do not rust. However, they are not strong enough.
The design of padlocks differs:
- The open mechanism is the classic model. The locking system is hidden in the body, the lock shackle is on the surface. Such a lock can be removed by breaking the integrity of the shackle.
- The semi-closed padlock uses a pin instead of a shackle. It is partially hidden in the housing opening.
- The closed padlock is the most reliable. The pin is completely hidden in the case. It cannot be cut down.
Mechanisms for padlocks are of several types:
- The suvald system of the padlock is good in that it can be opened only with the key of this lock. It is difficult to break into it.
- The cylinder mechanism of a padlock is opened with a key with notches that correspond to the location of the pins. When the key is turned, they are shifted and the system is unlocked.
- The disk lock is opened by shifting the disks with the key.
- The screw padlock system works by screwing or unscrewing the transom with a key. These locks are most often placed on garages.
- Code padlocks are unlocked by dialing a unique code. These are the most expensive padlocks.
How to choose a padlock
If increased reliability is required, choose a padlock of closed design. For ordinary conditions, to close a temporary house or other premises, a classic padlock is suitable. It is important that the shackle is fitted as tightly as possible and that the body does not dangle. Then the lock will be difficult to remove.
If a padlock made of steel or cast iron is to be used in an area with frequent precipitation and temperature fluctuations, it is better to choose a model with insulation. The body is covered with plastic protection, the shackle has a rubber braid, and the keyhole has a rubber plug. There is a drainage hole at the bottom of the case to drain condensation.
Choosing a padlock of any type pay attention to the fasteners. These should be durable stainless steel washers. The key should turn smoothly, without delay.
