Plaid and blanket: what is it, what's the difference

30.12.2022

Plaids and blankets add comfort to the home with their decor, texture and coloring. These products have significant differences in appearance and purpose. The task of the rug is not only to decorate, but also to give warmth. A blanket has a decorative and task. It is laid on the bed.

What is the difference between a blanket and a quilt

First of all, the difference in purpose, which affects what materials and dyes are used for these products. Plaid in the form of a large shawl or a thin blanket is designed to keep you warm. It is wrapped up in it, sitting at a book or computer, when it is cool at home.

A blanket is a decorative accessory designed to cover something. They cover the sofa to protect it from abrasion, under it hide bedding on the bed and so protect the bed from dust.

Externally, you can see several differences between a plaid and a blanket:

  • Plaid is most often made with the addition of wool or other materials that keep warm: fleece, fur, terry acrylic. It is soft to the touch. The blanket can be without the use of wool - cotton, synthetic, satin. Softness is not as important as attractiveness and combination with the design of the room. The bedspread can be made of thick or thin fabric.
  • Plaids are associated with a tartan plaid pattern. Often use delicate colors, discreet patterns. Plaids can be woven, knitted from voluminous threads or made of fake fur. Bedspreads are made in a variety of designs and textures, they have bright and saturated colors. They are sewn from solid fabric or from patchwork in the patchwork technique, woven with patterned or monochrome.
  • Plaids have a minimum of decorations, so that it was convenient to wrap up in it, nothing pressed or crumpled. A fringe on the edges is a maximum. Coverlets are decorated with ruffles, appliques, lace or embroidery.

A blanket can lie in a folded form or be carelessly thrown on the back of an armchair or chair. The blankets neatly cover the bed so that there are no folds. You can take the blanket on a picnic or on a trip. Blankets are exclusively home textiles.

Plaid is sometimes used as blankets. Especially if it is a large size and fits the style. A blanket, on the other hand, does not replace a plaid because its material does not keep you warm. Often a blanket is quite thick or stiff, or too thin compared to a soft plaid.

Plaid and blanket: a little history

The word plaid means a large woolen shawl. It was first used in Scotland, and as an element of clothing. In the national men's outfits, the plaid is made of the same fabric as the skirt. It is tied in such a way that it goes gathered obliquely across the chest and hangs down on one side almost to the floor. Over time, the plaid began to be used in everyday life to keep warm.

Blankets for bed decoration and upholstered furniture first began to be used in France. Initially they were a luxury available only to wealthy aristocrats. At the end of the 19th century the development of the textile industry allowed the production of bedspreads in large quantities. They became available to all comers.

Both plaid and bedspreads are a necessity in the home for the sake of coziness and comfort. A blanket adorns the bed or sofa, keeps its surface. A blanket is designed for body and soul - it relaxes and warms.
