Rolled sheets: what they are, types, applications

Sheet metal is used in the construction of buildings, in mechanical engineering, in the manufacture of parts and equipment. Such material is produced in the form of rolls or sliced sheets. The surface can be painted. Steel or non-ferrous metals are used as the basis. Sheet metal can be cut, stamped, welded and edged.

Methods of manufacturing sheet metal products

Depending on the method of manufacture, sheet metal is suitable for certain tasks. Because the manufacturing technology affects the properties of sheet metal. There are two methods: cold rolling and hot rolling on a special machine.

When sheets are made by hot-rolling method, carbon steel is taken as the basis, in which the alloying additives are introduced. This method is cheaper, so the price of production is lower.

Cold-rolled metal sheets are geometrically more accurate and more durable. The cold-rolled metal processing method is more complex, and the final products are more expensive. They are used in large-scale production, where increased product strength is required: in shipbuilding, building construction.

Types of sheet metal products

Sheet metal products are of these types:

• Hot-rolled sheets - the metal is deformed and processed by high temperature. The sheet has a rough matte surface.
• Galvanized sheets are made cold or hot. Their peculiarity is that a zinc coating is applied to the surface. Such material is not susceptible to corrosion.
• Cold-rolled sheets are rolled without heating using a special technology. Such material can be drawn if necessary.
• Strip-formed sheet - notches are made in the hot-rolled sheet and it is stretched. Cells are formed.
• Corrugated sheets - steel sheets with irregularities, which are applied at a certain angle or rhombuses. Such material covers the floor in the shop, steps, bridges, so as not to be slippery.

Rolled sheets vary in thickness. Thin-sheet steel comes in thicknesses from 0.5 to 3.9 mm. It is flexible and easy to mould. Thick sheet steel is from 4 to 160 mm thick, designed for high-strength products.

Application

Rolled metal products are used in such areas:

• Hot-rolled sheet is processed slopes, strengthen the formwork, it is used in the creation of pipelines, parts for the home.
• Cold-rolled sheet design the walls inside or outside of buildings, warehouses and other economic facilities.
• Expanded metal sheets are used in the manufacture of metal staircases, they strengthen observation platforms, tanks.
• Corrugated steel sheets are suitable for the equipment of ground platforms.
• Galvanized sheet is used to cover roofs, as well as to clad structures and food industry facilities.
• Stainless steel sheets are suitable for use where there is high humidity, exposure to acids or alkalis.
• Sleek painted steel sheet is suitable for decorative finishing of fences, doors and walls.

Sheet metal is used to produce both large products - tanks and tanks, fences, billboards for bigboards, furniture, and small - dishes, canisters, thermoses and more.
