Sink for the kitchen: types of materials, pros and cons, how to choose

20.11.2022

Previously, the choice of sinks in the kitchen was small - mostly enameled cast iron. And now so many options are available: from stainless steel to stone and even wood. Each material has its own characteristics, pros and cons. What material is better to choose a sink for the kitchen?

Stainless steel

This is a budget and the most popular type of material for kitchen sinks. It is easy to clean, it does not corrode. In terms of design, it is far from monotonous models. Stainless steel sinks come in round, square, rectangular, matte or lacquered, and even engraved.

Minus - the product makes "metallic" sounds when dishes are placed in it, or water pours from the faucet. With models with an insulating layer, the noise is reduced to a minimum. Also on the steel surface there are whitish traces of dried water drops.

To determine if the sink is really stainless steel, a magnet will help. A magnet will not stick to stainless steel. If it sticks, it means that the sink is not stainless.

Cast iron

These are enameled metal sinks. They used to be very popular, now have slightly receded their positions, but are still common. Cast iron is a strong metal, the enamel coating is also quite durable. However, if there will be a strong impact on the surface (for example, drop a pan into the sink), there may be a crack or chip. However, such a coating is still stronger than ceramic. Minus - over time, cast iron can rust. It is better not to clean the enamel with abrasive agents, so it does not lose its luster.

Other materials

Sinks for the kitchen are also made of such materials:

  • Composite - acrylic, corian, silgranite, etc. They make sinks of different shapes and colors. These materials are non-toxic, can withstand high temperatures, perfectly absorb the sound of water and clattering of dishes. Acrylic does not stain. The disadvantage is the higher cost.
  • Artificial stone. The material is made of granite, quartz or marble crumbs, bonded by resin. The surface is often covered with a special composition to protect against bacteria and mold. Artificial material is environmentally friendly, warmer to the touch than stone.
  • Ceramics - looks attractive, the surface does not form scratches, withstands high temperatures, it is easy to clean. Minus - heavy, it can crack on impact. If you have to wash heavy pans, there is a risk of damaging the sink.
  • Natural materials - water-resistant wood and stone (granite, marble, onyx, etc.). Stone sinks are either carved from solid stone, or slabs are joined together. They are very heavy, so they are placed on a sturdy base. Stains may remain on the stone. Very unusual and stylish looks, but too expensive.

How to choose

What material to choose a sink for the kitchen, depends on several factors:

  • What kind of use will be. If you need to wash a lot of heavy and large dishes (large pots, pans), then a fragile ceramic sink is not suitable. Stainless steel or cast iron will withstand occasional shocks.
  • Combination with design. If the kitchen is in the high-tech or loft style, the steel or cast iron sink will complement the image, will be combined with other metal surfaces. A ceramic or acrylic sink with a natural material, stone or wood finish would fit perfectly into a country or vintage style kitchen.
  • Practicality. It is more difficult to remove stains from stone or mat ceramic. On stainless steel, stains and splash marks are often visible. Metal has to be rubbed down to remove them.

Whatever the material of the sink, modern products look very attractive. You can choose a classic or original model for any kitchen interior.
