Welding semi-automatic machine: what it is, types, how to choose
- 19.01.2025
MIG/MAG welding is characterized by the fastest speed of the process. For it, a welding semiautomatic machine is used to work with flux-cored wire in a shielding gas environment. The peculiarity of the process is that the filler material is fed automatically. There are no high requirements for the operator. It is convenient that the welder does not have to replace the electrodes himself during work.
Semi-automatic welding is used for joining metal. This method is suitable for working with steel of different types, including stainless steel, aluminum and its alloys. When welding with a semi-automatic machine, complex connections are made. Seams are obtained qualitative and durable.
Types of welding semiautomatic machines
Differences in welding semiautomatic machines by purpose and capabilities:
- Domestic welding semiautomatic machines are connected to the household network in 220 V. The operating current of this equipment is not more than 200 A. The device can work for a short time.
- Semiprofessional welding semiautomatic machines are more powerful, their maximum current is 300 A. Welding is carried out with steel wire and shielding gas. You can also use coated electrodes, which are designed for manual arc welding. This method is called MMA.
- Professional welding semiautomatic machines are connected to a three-phase network with a voltage of 380 V. They can work for a long time. The limit value of the welding current is 400 A. In addition to standard methods, professional welding semiautomatic machines are used for argon-arc welding with tungsten electrodes. This method is called TIG. Also, some models work in the format of pulse welding.
Semi-automatic welding machines differ in how the wire is fed, how they are cooled, what voltage they need. This equipment, depending on the model, works with inert or active gas. There are also universal multifunctional models. Semi-automatic welding machine can be with all parts in one body or in two units.
How to choose a semi-automatic machine
Pay attention to such characteristics:
- Maximum welding current, indicating the power. From this depends on how thick the welding will be.
- The duration of activation of the machine determines how long you can work on the equipment from the mains during one welding cycle at a certain amperage.
- Synergy setting gives a more accurate and faster setting of the machine. The equipment will adjust the voltage automatically according to wire feed speed, shielding gas type, wire material and diameter.
- Special functions and additional options make working with the semi-automatic welder easier. The “Hot Start” function and the ability to weld a crater reduces the number of defects. A special program for welding the root of the seam gives it a more reliable weld. Reduction of spattering, display of parameters at the welding point make the work very precise.
- Pulse mode is necessary for joining metal in the form of a thin sheet, to reduce spattering.
Choosing a semi-automatic welding machine, pay attention to the reputation of the manufacturer. You can read reviews on the Internet about a particular model of equipment.
