What are dental abutments and why are they so important in dental implantology

16.05.2023

Implants are an opportunity to restore the aesthetic and functional qualities of the loss of one or more teeth. The structure of an implant includes such elements:

  • The body. This is the part that is implanted in the bone of the jaw;
  • The apex. The narrowest part with a thread that corresponds to the root apex of the tooth;
  • The neck is the part that protrudes and the gum shaper and crown abutment are attached to it.

Each implant system contains its own set of different standard abutments. This allows the dentist to address literally any clinical situation.

Expensive systems have a huge selection of abutments, which is what makes them so popular among dentists. The abutment and implant attachment system also plays an important role. The better it is, the longer the entire structure will last.

The main differences between a standard abutment and a custom abutment

An abutment comes in two varieties:

  • The individual abutment. It is produced in a single copy and will have a specific shape that is required in a particular case. Custom abutments are available in titanium, ceramic, gold plated metal, etc.;
  • standard. These are factory-made dental accessories that will all have the same shape and parameters. They are usually made of titanium, more rarely other metals. Standard abutments come in different shapes and lengths, and they also vary in inclination with respect to the root of the tooth. They will fit most patients.

Standard abutments do not always fit individually. But they can be used in dental implant patients with chewing teeth.

Attaching an implant to an abutment: features

The abutment is an auxiliary device on which the implant is already attached. The method of attachment can be different:

  • on the cement. This method is the same as the attachment of the crown on the native tooth. In this case, a special cement-based solution is used. It holds the entire structure quite securely. It is not possible to remove the implant, you just need to saw everything. Cement fixation is mainly used for single implantation;
  • Screw-retained method. The crown is attached to the abutment using a screw that is inserted through a hole on the chewing side of the denture. The screw must go through the crown and abutment and screw into the threads that are designed for it. The hole in the implant is sealed with a tone-in-tone composite. The main advantage is that the structure can be removed if restoration is needed.

In any clinic and private offices, which are not only engaged in the treatment, but also in dental implantology, there should be a large set of abutments. Then you can choose the right model for different patients. The use of modern instruments and materials allows to achieve good results in all procedures.
