Passenger car body: types and features

28.11.2022

Sedan, convertible, minivan - these are types of passenger car bodies. From the differences in their design depends on the capacity of passengers in the cabin, and cargo in the trunk. The type of body also affects the appearance of the car.

Sedan .

This car model has three pronounced parts: the hood under the engine, the passenger compartment and a separate small trunk. The body is closed, with four doors.

Features:

  • The car's interior warms up quickly because it is separated from the trunk.
  • The smell from the luggage compartment does not get into the interior of the car.
  • The compartment for cargo and belongings is small. The trunk is low.
  • The rear window is elongated in shape, because of this it is less dirty.
  • Panoramic windows give a good overview.

Universal car

The trunk of the car is connected to the passenger compartment. The roof is extended to the end of the body in the rear. Due to this, the body, combined with the trunk, allows you to carry passengers or oversized cargo. The seats fold down, creating an area on which a closet or sofa can be placed. Even if the car is occupied by passengers, the luggage compartment is voluminous - from floor to ceiling. You can put a lot of things there.

Hatchback

The length of the hatchback body is less than that of sedans. Sloping roof slope passes into the trunk doors, the rear overhang is shortened. The space allows you to install a second row of seats in the back. This is a compact car with a fairly spacious trunk. The rear doors allow you to place even bulky cargo. There is no partition between the body and the interior. Because of this, the interior will take longer to warm up.

Limousine

The driver's seat is separated from the passenger compartment by a partition. The body of a limousine resembles an elongated sedan. There are usually three windows in a row on each side. The emphasis is on passenger comfort. There is often a table or a mini-bar in the saloon of the car. The seats are voluminous and soft. Visually, the limousine is divided into three sectors: the hood, a long salon and a small trunk.

Minivan

The hood of a minivan is small or virtually non-existent. The motor is placed as close to the cabin as possible. The driver can see the road better, which makes driving easier.

The body is higher than a station wagon, but there is no room for a standing person. The minivans have an increased volume of the cabin and trunk, fits 3-4 rows of seats. They can be moved forward to increase the luggage compartment, which is combined with the cabin. Also, the passenger seats can be connected in one row or located at a small distance. Armrests can be installed for each seat.

Convertible

A distinctive feature of the convertible is the folding roof. It comes in two types:

  • A folding roof folds down and is placed in a part of the luggage compartment. The roof covering is textile waterproof. Thanks to this, the folded roof takes up less space. It is convenient that when the weather changes, you can quickly unfold the roof and protect yourself from the rain.
  • Removable roof is made of metal or a rigid frame with a stretched textile. It has to be left in the garage. Therefore, if the weather suddenly goes bad, you can get wet.

Crossover and SUV

Crossover and SUV bodies are similar with a roomy interior, high ground clearance and a voluminous trunk. The trunk is combined with the interior. The SUV is different because it has a stronger frame construction of the body. This allows it to withstand the off-road loads. The crossover is designed more for driving on asphalt. It is acceptable to drive on light off-road. The SUV has an emphasis on cross-country ability. The crossover is focused on comfort of the passengers.

What type of body to choose depends on the conditions in which the car will be used - in a tight city, off-road or will need to overcome long distances on highways. Versatility or an emphasis on passenger comfort is important.
